Laurie Thomas is a writer and filmmaker of Jamaican-descent raised in Miami, New Orleans, and the San Francisco Bay area. Her work explores themes of racial and gender violence, home and displacement. As a filmmaker, her films have screened at several festivals including the Palm Springs International Shorts Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, and SXSW Film Festival among others. Her commissioned documentary short, Black Girl Magic was nominated for a 2017 National Magazine Award. Laurie has received support from the MacDowell Colony, Cine Qua Non Lab, and the Tulsa Artist Fellowship. She is working on a feature script, and a collection of short stories. She received her M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Columbia University.
