Terra Cognita: Mapping Land Narratives and Embedded Epistemologies, a sound bath and panel discussion
Thursday, April 17, 2025 | 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Central Standard is pleased to invite you to an interdisciplinary panel that weaves together geology, ancestral knowledge, environmental activism, and art. Please join us on April 17, from 5:30–7 PM at the Arco Building for Terra Cognita—Latin for “Known Land”—as we explore the deep narratives and embedded wisdom carried by the landscapes around and within us. This event is part of Drift///Hold, an exhibition presented in partnership with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, which explores themes of movement, transformation, and the interplay between human experience and the natural world.
The evening will begin with a meditative group sound bath facilitated by Susan Webb of Sana Meditation, designed to attune your awareness to the subtle energies of place. Please bring a yoga mat for comfort!
Afterward, we will continue in a seated position for a rich panel discussion exploring the interwoven threads of scientific insight and cultural memory. How do we read the land? And how does the land read us?
Panelists include Kelsey Putman Hughes, Geologist; Molly Bullock, Environmental Activist; and Kalyn Fay Barnoski, Artist and Cultural Practitioner. Moderated by Ashanti Chaplin, Artist and Co-Founder of Central Standard.
Free and open to the public, but space is limited.
Central Standard, a new contemporary art platform based in Tulsa, launched its inaugural exhibition, Drift///Hold, presented in partnership with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship. Drift///Hold closes with public program Terra Cognita: Mapping Land Narratives and Embedded Epistemologies, a sound bath and panel discussion.
The exhibition opened on February 20 at the newly renovated Price Family Properties’ Arco Building (119 E. 6th Street, Tulsa, OK). Founded by Tulsa-born curators Lindsay Aveilhé and Ashanti Chaplin, Central Standard is dedicated to elevating contemporary art in Middle America and fostering international artistic exchange.
Featuring Oklahoma-born or Oklahoma-based artists Ashanti Chaplin, Yatika Fields (Osage, Muscogee, Cherokee), Le’Andra LeSeur, Warren Realrider (Pawnee, Crow), and Nathan Young (Delaware Tribe of Lenape Indians), Drift///Hold explores themes of transformation, perception, and the interplay between physical and metaphysical worlds. Through performance, sensorial installations, and natural elements, the exhibition invites audiences to rethink knowledge and time through intuition, memory, and ancestral wisdom.
In addition to Drift///Hold, Central Standard presented a companion exhibition, I Put a Spell on You, featuring artist Kalup Linzy at OATH Studio (1119 South Owasso Avenue), a historic Tulsa home designed by architect Bruce Goff.
Drift///Hold will be on view through April 18, with public hours from Thursday to Saturday, 12–5 PM. Private group tours of the exhibition are available by appointment. For tours or general inquiries, contact info@central-standard.org, visit central-standard.org, or call +1 918 770 9928.
