Join us on Thursday, August 10 at 7 pm CT for the sixth edition of LALTulsa, dedicated to the new book Daughters of Latin America: An International Anthology of Writing by Latine Women, coming August 15, 2023, by HarperCollins’s Amistad Press. We’ll discuss how this groundbreaking collection came to be with editor Sandra Guzmán and hear a moving multilingual reading from Maya K’iche’-Kaqchikel poet Rosa Chávez and translator Gabriela Ramirez-Chavez.
LALTulsa is a reading and conversation series with the translators, editors, and authors who bring Latin American literature to life in English, hosted by Arthur Malcolm Dixon, Tulsa Artist Fellow and Managing Editor of Latin American Literature Today.
Amistad, a division of HarperCollins in the HarperOne group, is the oldest imprint devoted to books by and about Black people throughout the diaspora.

Sandra Guzmán is a pioneering Afro-Indigenous storyteller, culture writer, literary editor, and documentary filmmaker whose work reclaims and re-centers narratives of people and communities outside the margins. She is the editor of the forthcoming international anthology of Latin American women writers, Daughters of Latin America: An International Anthology of Writing by Latine Women. The multi-genre anthology features 140 powerful voices in one volume—from well-known beloved writers to rising stars. Sandra is Taina and Black and was born in Boriken, a nation known by its colonized name, Puerto Rico.
Rosa Chávez is a Maya K’iche’-Kaqchikel poet, educator, and artivist. The author of five poetry books, her work has been widely anthologized and translated into Maya K’iche’, French, English, and Norwegian, among other languages.
Gabriela Ramirez-Chavez is a Seattle-based poet and translator born to Guatemalan immigrants. As a translator, she focuses on Indigenous literatures of Latin America, especially from Mesoamerica. Her translations of Rosa Chávez (Maya K’iche’ and Kaqchikel), with whom she regularly collaborates, appear in Poetry, BOMB Magazine, Asymptote, and elsewhere. Gabriela’s own poetry is featured in literary journals and anthologies, including The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States.

Arthur Malcolm Dixon is co-founder, lead translator, and Managing Editor of Latin American Literature Today. He has translated the novels Immigration: The Contest by Carlos Gámez Pérez and There Are Not So Many Stars by Isaí Moreno (Katakana Editores), as well as the verse collection Intensive Care by Arturo Gutiérrez Plaza (Alliteratïon). He also works as a community interpreter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is a Tulsa Artist Fellow.
