ABOUT MICAELA TOBIN / WHITE BOY SCREAM
Micaela Tobin is a composer and sound artist who wields her soprano voice in experimental opera and noise, exploring the physical and "inner" voice as tools of empowerment and resistance. Through voice, electronics, ritual, and amplified object-symbolism, she creates music that challenges colonial narratives and sonic norms. Her solo project White Boy Scream deconstructs operatic technique through harsh noise and drone, interrogating her identity as a first-generation Filipina-American. Her acclaimed album BAKUNAWA (Deathbomb Arc) blends myth, memory, and sonic ritual, earning praise from The New Yorker and The Wire. Her forthcoming album APOLAKI continues this evolution, called “a brilliant showcase” by Passion of the Weiss. As a composer-director, Micaela premiered BAKUNAWA: Opera of the Seven Moons at REDCAT (2021) and APOLAKI: Opera of the Scorched Earth at Zorthian Ranch (2023), both rooted in precolonial Filipino mythologies. She is a 2024 Tulsa Artist Fellow, bringing her immersive practice from Los Angeles to Tulsa.
ABOUT BASECK
Baseck is an experimental electronic musician. His roots run deep in L.A.'s underground rave scene. His fascination with sound from the discovery of mixtapes brought him to turntablism at an early age. The attraction to hands-on hardware learned from scratching records lent its way to audio manipulation with battery-powered toys, drum machines, and modular synthesizers. This exploration of sound and technology inspired collaborations with synth companies, giving Baseck opportunities to design hardware and sound banks for these machines. Baseck's style builds on past musical experiments combining 80’s drum machines, sounds of breakdance and industrial, with a future approach to drum & bass and IDM. His latest EP, ENERGY MORPH, is out now on Boysnoize Records.
