Join us on Wednesday, September 6 at 12 pm CT for the seventh edition of LALTulsa, where we’ll discuss two forthcoming books from the creative team of Irene Vasco (author), Juan Palomino (illustrator), and Lawrence Schimel (translator): LETTERS IN CHARCOAL (Lantana Publishing, coming September 5) and THE YOUNG TEACHER AND THE GREAT SERPENT (Eerdman’s Books for Young Readers, coming October 10).
Irene, Juan, and Lawrence will talk about the collaborative processes that give rise to children’s literature in translation and the importance of broadening cultural horizons for young readers.
LALTulsa is a reading and conversation series with the translators, editors, and authors who bring Latin American literature to life in English, hosted by Arthur Malcolm Dixon, Tulsa Artist Fellow and Managing Editor of Latin American Literature Today.

Colombian writer, Irene Vasco, has published many books for children and young readers, several of which have received important prizes. Her best known books are Conjuros y sortilegios, Mambrú perdió la guerra, Lugares fantásticos de Colombia, and Letras al carbón. Her reading guides Expedición Macondo and Expedición El Principito are widely appreciated in the classroom. She dedicates much of her life to leading reading and literacy workshops, often taking part in state-sponsored and institutional programs aimed at indigenous and peasant communities. She has also participated in international conferences and seminars. As well as a specialist in children’s and young people’s literature, she is a translator from the Portuguese and the French.
Juan Palomino studied Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and Letters of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He has illustrated books for children and young people for several presses in Mexico and Spain. He won the fourth edition of the Ibero-American Catalog of Illustration, the illustration prize at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2016, and, along with Amanda Mijangos and Armando Fonseca, a Golden Apple at the 28th Biennial of Illustration Bratislava. His books have received the Cuatro Gatos Foundation Prize three times and the INAH’s Antonio García Cubas Prize on three other occasions, and he has won a White Raven from the International Youth Library in Munich.
Lawrence Schimel (New York, 1971) is a full-time author, writing in both Spanish and English, who has published over 130 books in a wide range of genres. His picture books have won a Crystal Kite Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, a White Raven from the International Youth Library in Munich, and have been chosen by IBBY for Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities (three times), among other honors. His writings have been translated into over sixty languages, including Icelandic, Maltese, Farsi, Kurdish, Basque, Luxembourgish, Changana, isiZulu, Romansch, and Japanese. In addition to his own writing, he is a prolific literary translator, primarily into English and into Spanish, who has published over 150 books. His translations into English have won a Batchelder Honor from the American Library Association, a PEN Translates Award from English PEN (three times), and a National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship (with Layla Benitez-James), among other honors. He started the Spain chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and illustrators and served as its Regional Advisor for five years. He also coordinated the International SCBWI Conference in Madrid and the first two SCBWI-Bologna Book Fair conferences. He is the Spanish-language editor for children’s book publisher NorthSouth Books. He lives in Madrid, Spain.
Arthur Malcolm Dixon is co-founder, lead translator, and Managing Editor of Latin American Literature Today. He has translated the novels Immigration: The Contest by Carlos Gámez Pérez and There Are Not So Many Stars by Isaí Moreno (Katakana Editores), as well as the verse collection Intensive Care by Arturo Gutiérrez Plaza (Alliteratïon). He also works as a community interpreter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is a Tulsa Artist Fellow.
