Tulsa Artist Fellowship is honored to host independent arts consultant, curator, educator, and writer nico w. okoro for a discussion about her book Museum Metamorphosis: Cultivating Change Through Cultural Citizenship. Based in New Haven, CT, nico is the founder and principal of the bldg fund, llc; a visiting critic at the Yale School of Art; and a board member at The National Academy of Design and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. An advocate for BIPOC and womxn artists in all endeavors, she uses her myriad platforms to deepen the canon of contemporary art whilst cultivating an engaged community of practice. Following nico's presentation, Tulsa Artist Fellowship awardee Ashanti Chaplin will offer a deeper investigation of the insights posed by many of the contributors in her book. The program will conclude with a Q&A.

nico’s upcoming exhibitions include Embodied Knowledge at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art (Summer 2023) and Century: 100 Years of Black Art at the Montclair Art Museum (Winter 2024), with recent exhibitions at Creative Arts Workshop, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Welancora Gallery, Sapar Contemporary, and Future Fair. As a consultant, nico delivers cultural strategy to artist-entrepreneurs, cultural institutions, government agencies, and philanthropic foundations, and has recently supported strategic initiatives at the Association of Art Museum Curators, BOMB Magazine, Creative Capital, the Legacy Museum, the Arizona State University, and the New Britain Museum of American Art. An arts writer and cultural critic, nico has forthcoming essays to be published by the National Gallery of Victoria and Routledge later this year. She is the author of Museum Metamorphosis: Cultivating Change Through Cultural Citizenship—published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers and the American Alliance of Museums Press in 2022—which she’s discussed in keynote presentations at MoMA PS1, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Smith College Museum of Art to name a few, with an upcoming engagement at Art Bridges Foundation. In recent posts, nico served as an Adjunct Professor of Art at Brown University, Barnard College, and Hartford Art School (2016 - 2021); Inaugural Executive Director of NXTHVN (2019 - 2020); Inaugural Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2014 - 2019); Curatorial Director of Rush Arts Gallery (2007 - 2010); and Curatorial Assistant at The Studio Museum in Harlem (2006 - 2007). nico holds an MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship from Goldsmiths, University of London (2011), and a BA in Art-Semiotics from Brown University (2006).
