TULSA ARTIST FELLOWSHIP & QUEEN ROSE ART HOUSE UNTITLED ART MIAMI ARTS WEEK 2023

Tulsa Artist Fellowship returns to Miami Art Week in partnership with Queen Rose Art House at Untitled Art. This year's programming includes a panel discussion, Fly Over Passed Over, as part of the Untitled Art Podcast and performances by awardee Kalup Linzy and Tulsa-based artists Antonio Andrews and Trueson Daugherty.

FLY OVER PASSED OVER (PANEL DISCUSSION)

Wednesday, December 6, 2023 | 12:30-1:30 pm
Untitled Art
Ocean Drive and 12th Street
Miami Beach, FL

Panelists include Antonio Andrews, Trueson Daugherty, Ashanti Chaplin, Kate Green, and Carolyn Sickles

A conversation discussing artists and art workers who pursue a career in a so-called flyover state such as Oklahoma. Although many art world institutions tend to be conservative, the majority of the art world tends to lean liberal. How do liberal artists and art workers in a socially conservative so-called flyover state such as Oklahoma attract support, capture the attention, and thrive in their local, regional, national, and international art communities while simultaneously facing rejection and pushback?

Antonio Andrews will open with the hip-hop rap performance, Everyday, and the panel will conclude with a spoken word performance by Kalup Linzy entitled Equality Beam, meditating on equality, assurance, and confidence in a space where the odds seem stacked against you.

Kalup Linzy, Tulsa Artist Fellow and founder/director of Queen Rose Art House, will moderate the discussion. The panelists include Antonio Andrews, Tulsa-based artist and founder of No Parking Studios; Trueson Daugherty, Tulsa-based artist; Ashanti Chaplin, Tulsa Artist Fellow, cultural producer, and multiform conceptual artist; Kate Green, Ph.D., Chief Curator & Nancy E. Meinig Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, Philbrook Museum of Art; and Carolyn Sickles, Executive & Artistic Director of Tulsa Artist Fellowship.

Trueson Daugherty

Featuring Trueson Daugherty & Curated by Kalup Linzy

Born into the Unification Church, Daugherty experienced an arranged marriage and mass wedding ceremony led by the late Rev. Moon. Participation in these ceremonies required strict devotion to the Unification Church, significant monetary offerings, and belief that Rev. Moon was the long-awaited Second Coming. In Absolute Obedience, Daugherty and his wife, Zia Daugherty, will serve slices of a symbolic mass wedding cake meticulously adorned with over 100 custom-made bride and groom figurines. The piece catalyzes dialogue about the nuances of religious rituals, cultural heritage, and the implications of conformity.

Trueson Daugherty is an emerging visual artist, performance artist, and social sculptor whose name has become known in Tulsa's art scene. In 2023 he set out to help foster a vibrant arts community in Tulsa by hosting an artist salon that cultivates connections and nurtures professional growth among local artists. At the heart of Trueson's artistic philosophy lies a profound belief in art as the ultimate expression of consciousness. He believes that art plays a pivotal role in a society's ability to grapple with the complex dimensions of the human experience. Through his works, Trueson aims to spark conversations, evoke emotions, and initiate a deeper exploration of our shared humanity.

Kalup Linzy is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tulsa, OK. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a grant from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, a Creative Capital Foundation grant, a Jerome Foundation Fellowship, an Art Matters Grant, The Headlands Center for the Arts Alumni Awards Residency, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Film and Video and a BAU Institute Travel Grant. Linzy's best-known work is a series of politically charged videos that satirize the conventions of the television soap opera. His work is in the public collections at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, and the Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester. Linzy has worked and collaborated with many well-known artists, celebrities, and fashion designers. James Franco, Chloe Sevigny, Natasha Lyonne, Liya Kebede, Leo Fitzpatrick, James Ransone, and Dan Colen are among them. He is a Tulsa Artist Fellow. In 2021, he founded the Queen Rose Art House in Tulsa. Linzy is represented by David Castillo (Miami, FL) and The Breeder Gallery (Athens, Greece).
