Join James Beard-nominated writer and Tulsa Artist Fellowship alum Sarah Perry for a special food writing workshop and brunch to celebrate her latest publication, Sweet Nothings!
Smell and taste are two of our most powerful means of accessing memory, and food is deeply tied to our identities, cultures, and places of origin. In this workshop, participants will gather together and share a meal, stopping along the way to use the flavors, textures, and smells of the dish to try out several writing exercises. The group will enjoy desserts and candy at the end of the meal.
We’ll learn techniques for representing sensory experience on the page, imbuing description with emotion, and creating unique descriptions. For inspiration, participants will be provided with optional reading before the session and will hear from Perry’s work and others during the session. The focus will be on personal writing—essay and memoir—that uses food as a subject and tool, rather than restaurant reviews or trade copy. Emphasis will be placed on play and experimentation—all experience levels are welcome.
Registered workshop participants will receive a free copy of Sweet Nothings that can be signed at Sarah Perry's in-store reading at Magic City Books on Wednesday, March 18, at 6 PM.
